Asthma and Chiropractic

Asthma, once a rare disease, is now one of the leading causes of chronic illness in the US, and it’s on the rise! More than 17 million people in the US suffer from asthma, and it’s one of the most common illnesses among children. This health problem is the reason for nearly half a million hospital visits each year and it costs Americans billions of dollars. It’s a health care problem on the rise, and has become so common in our society that we just accept it as normal. However, these asthma patients are destined to a life dependent on drugs.

Asthma is a disease in which airways become blocked or narrowed. These effects are marked by shortness of breath, breathing difficulties and possible death. It is triggered by chemical allergens such as pollen, animals, dust, and stress factors such as exercise or emotional stress. Medical care usually includes anti-inflammatory drugs and bronchodilator drugs. These drugs tend to lose their effectiveness over time and subject the patient to side effects, which can sometimes be life threatening. Many children on these drugs are not able to live normal, active lives. Parents are often concerned about putting their children at risk with the long term use of these drugs.

There is an alternative to this potentially dangerous drug approach. Asthma patients have been discovering surprising results with their wellness chiropractor. Many patients initially decline to tell their chiropractor that they suffer from asthma. As care progresses, they find themselves asking their chiropractor, “Will chiropractic affect my asthma? I’ve noticed an amazing improvement since starting care!” Thousands of asthma sufferers have found relief in a chiropractic office, and now some studies are supporting this phenomenon. In a 1997 study published in the Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research, doctors placed 81 asthmatic children under chiropractic care. These children were evaluated after 60 days of chiropractic care. The results were simply amazing! There was a significant improvement in the child’s asthma impairment score in 90.1% of the children, and many of the children voluntarily decreased their medications. In a 1995 study published in Chiropractic Pediatrics, seven out of eight children who were under chiropractic care were able to reduce or eliminate their asthma medication.
